Amazon Fire HD 10 Design and Choices

Amazon Fire Tablet Feature wise Review – (Amazon Fire 10 HD)

DESIGN

Amazon Fire tablet 10 has a plastic body, and a 10.1-inch LCD screen 1920 * 1200 display rather giving it a plain look when compared to its other competitors. It measures at 262*159*9.8 mm weighing around 500 gms. Though its heavy in weight, its still comfortable enough to hold. Many users go with a cover or a stand as its plastic curved body makes it slide easily which may be quiet challenging. The main camera lens is at the back with Amazon’s logo, metallic controls are at the top while the power button is at the bottom when holding it in landscape view. Between the two USB ports , we have a microphone and a 3.5 mm head jack thoughtfully provided. Stereo speakers are positioned one at each end at the top of the tablet. For additional storage, there is a micro SD slot at the bottom’s edge. Amazon fire tablet is available in shades of black, blue’s and red. All in all, it is pretty and sturdy even though the body is plastic instead of metallic.

DISPLAY

Has a 10.1-inch LCD screen 1920 * 1200 display. This provides for a pixel density of 224 pixels per inch. Surprisingly it has sharp , vibrant and bright display which reduces the strain of holding the tablet very close as one does hold a smart phone . The blacks aren’t that deep but the tablet is reflective . It doesn’t display very well under the direct sun though.

PROCESSOR

Amazon fire HD 10 runs on Fire OS 5.5 using one of the latest modified version Google’s android 1.8 GHz MT8173B MediaTek processor. It has scored double on performance than Amazon Fire 8 tablet and other versions on multi-core performance tests and also on GeekBench’s Single core with the score of 1500 and 3000 while the score of Amazon Fire 8 is 629/1687 . With this more powerful processor and 2GB RAM, we get a more responsive UI, smoother performance and better performance in multitasking and browsing. In terms of apps installed, it lacks google apps , chrome and apps like youtube , Gmail etc in comparison to other Android and Apple tablets and works on Amazon’s Silk web browser instead.

BATTERY & STORAGE

Amazon fire HD 10 gives 10 hours of battery life after mixed usage of watching online videos , gaming , browsing etc . When compared to other brands like Asus Zenpad 3S , Amazon fire HD 10 out-performed them but in terms of charging it takes 5 hours to charge fully from zero which is a pretty long time.
The Amazon Fire 10 HD tablet has 32 GB internal storage and can support 256 GB micro SD card. It also has a 64 GB variant. Considering the extended storage option provided, I would say this is pretty good for normal use.

CAMERA AND SOUND

Amazon fire HD 10 ranks low in terms of camera as it has a 2 MEGA PIXEL rear camera and a front facing VGA camera (640*480 pixels) which is pretty outdated, and with its 10.1 inch screen size becomes quite low res. The pics taken are grainy ,and patchy . It’s disappointing that the camera is pretty basic but then tablets aren’t generally used for clicking pictures. On the other hand surprisingly the sound quality is impressive even without headphones . With its dual stereo Dolby Atmos speakers they produce pretty good sound and clarity. The 3.5 mm headphones come along just in case one feels the need. This tablet also has Bluetooth 4.2 for wireless audio.

ALEXA & ENTERTAINMENT

One of the best features of this tablet is Alexa hands free. It works nicely with voice commands and can be a great companion. It is as easy to use as Amazon Echo. One just needs to call Alexa even in sleep mode and give commands for searching , playing music , pausing movie , weather ,open apps etc. Alexa responds well to the commands when in close proximity. But when at a noisy place or with background noise can produce confused results. It even gives visual display of results like weather and breakdown of the calendar. Alexa’s hands free mode can be switched on and off according to your need. Amazon Fire tablets have also been provided with parental control making it a great choice for kids by locking apps, time limits , limited web browsing .

Some content options with Amazon Fire HD 10

Some content options with Amazon Fire HD 10

With it’s 10.1 inch screen watching movies and playing games is a great experience at such a cheap cost. Alexa on the other hand enhances the music play with its voice commands. Most games can be played without a hitch. Also one can play TV shows , books and if one has an Amazon Prime subscription they can enjoy endless entertainment options with smooth flow . Other Content like Netflix, HULU, HBO NOW can also be streamed so there’s plenty of choice with the Amazon Fire Tablet 10.

VERDICT:

The Amazon Fire Tablet 10 HD packs a powerful punch and is feature laden. With its affordable pricing it provides a good option for those who do not wish to go with the iPad. Among other competing tablets, it is better in performance, resolution and storage than the Acer Iconia One 10 and cheaper than the Lenovo Tab 4 10. The iPad beats it slightly in performance , resolution and is obviously better in design but then it is comes for more than twice the price.

The only weakness we could find considering the price is the lack of choice in browsers and emphasis on Amazon content (though you can access Hulu, Netflix, HBO Now etc. from Amazon App store). Android Apps , iTunes etc. are not directly available and some sort of workaround (like this one ) is required for using Android apps. It would be great if the big guys of Silicon valley actually stop acting like a bunch of teenagers and come together to provide universal content options be it on Chromecast, Fire TV, Fire Tablet, IPad etc.
Our wish-list: Allow choice in browsers, Google Apps access and maybe a better 5 mp camera.

Amazon Fire Tablet HD 10 vs. Fire HD 8

Amazon fire tablet 10 has a larger screen (10.1 inch screen vs. 8 inch), sharper images , more RAM (2 GB vs. 1.5 GB in the latest generation), more powerful processor when compared to Amazon Fire tablet 8 which is a mid-range tablet . Also when compared on the multicore score comparison with other devices Amazon fire tablet 10 scored 4351 while Amazon fire tablet 8 only scored 1887 which is quiet low.

Which Amazon Fire Tablet to Buy ?

Amazon has done a commendable job of creating a family of tablets that appeal to different user groups. The Fire HD 8 is probably a favourite all round tablet with a price well under the $100 mark, HD viewing such as Amazon, Netflix content, other apps etc., video calling etc. It’s suitable for gaming as well but high performance gaming may cause some lags and performance issues. As far as Fire 7 is concerned we believe it’s screen size is a bit too small to be very useful and also lower resolution is not acceptable with the kind of high-res content currently available on streaming. You anyways only save peanuts if you choose it, so you’re better of with the Fire HD 8, or Fire HD 10. Coming to the Fire HD 10, if you can shell out a few extra bucks and screen portability is not an issue, then this is the best tablet to buy. You can speak to Alexa across the room without pressing any buttons (“hands free Alexa”). The processing power, screen size etc. all make it best for within home usage.
Finally talking about Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids edition and Amazon 7 Kids, these are obviously targeting the younger folks and here also we recommend the Fire HD 8 Kids edition. Kids are pretty aware and selective today and having HD with a better sound will help keep them happy. Better processing power than the Fire 7 Kids means a better gaming experience.
